Tony Robbins teaches (in Awaken the Giant Within) that the emotions you are feeling at this very moment are a gift, a guideline, a support system, a call to action. Each negative emotion sends a specific message and points toward a specific action. Master them, and you can convert negative feelings into constructive responses. Here are the ten primary negative emotions, the message each carries, and what to do about it.
- Discomfort — signals that something isn't working. Reassess the situation, question your perceptions, and refine your approach.
- Fear — indicates you're unprepared. Figure out what mental, physical, or financial preparation you need.
- Hurt — stems from unmet expectations. Recognize false perceptions, question harsh judgments, and communicate with the person involved.
- Anger — means a personal standard has been violated. Reconsider your interpretation, question whether your rules are universal, and focus on solutions rather than grievances.
- Frustration — an exciting signal that you could do better. Treat it as motivation to brainstorm new approaches or seek mentorship.
- Disappointment — suggests an important goal won't happen on the current path. Extract the lessons, set new goals, recognize the setback is temporary, and keep positive expectations.
- Guilt — indicates you've violated your own standards. Face it directly and commit to not repeating it.
- Inadequacy — reveals missing skills or resources. Question whether the emotion fits the situation, then commit to acquiring what you need.
- Overload — calls you to prioritize. Identify what matters most and say no to less important demands.
- Loneliness — signals a need for connection. Reach out and build relationships immediately.
Repetition and daily reflection on these emotions is what lets the responses become subconscious. So when an emotion shows up — read its message, and just do it.
